Passion Week Feature: Evellyn

Passion Week Feature: Evellyn

At Passion Planner, all team members receive a “Passion Week” each year. With paid time off and a stipend to spend on pursuing our passions, we ensure that we’re not only spreading the message of Passion Planner, but living it in our own lives. Evellyn, our Brand Partnership Specialist, flew her family out to the East Coast for some quality time and memory making. Here’s her reflection on her most recent Passion Week. I got the chance to spend quality time with the most important people in my life: my parents. I flew them out to my home in Boston and took them on an East Coast tour, planning our entire family trip from start to finish. Together, we explored the city, watched a Red Sox game, and ate some yummy lobster to celebrate my dad's birthday. We later took the Amtrak to New York City. I remember my dad telling me that he'd never been on a train before so I knew I had to make it happen. Once there, we of course saw all the touristy stuff: Time Square, The Vessel at Hudson…

6 Steps to Beat a Funk

6 Steps to Beat a Funk

Funks are the worst. A tell-tale sign to know you’re in one is when you haven’t filled out your Passion Planner in a while, resulting in planner guilt. Whether it’s analysis paralysis or another challenge weighing you down, you have the power to reclaim productivity. Here are six steps to help you beat a funk.1. NAME IT.One of my soul sisters, Rikka, shared this advice with me when I was in a month-long funk, seemingly without any explanation. “Give your funk a name,” she said. “A name?” I thought to myself. What does that even mean? Her words began to make sense over time. Because a funk feels like an elusive fog, calling it something gives you ownership over it, instead of it owning you. Profess it: This is my break-up funk! Or my I-can’t-find-a-job funk, or even my I-don’t-know-what-I’m-doing-with-my-life funk! No matter what you name it, when you claim it, you begin to release its power over you.2. FEEL IT. For me, funks feel like apathy at first. After some digging, it’s usua…

3 Questions to Ask Yourself to Tap Into Your “Why”

3 Questions to Ask Yourself to Tap Into Your “Why”

Something I’ve learned over the years is that finding your “why” is more a process than a destination.  Because I love personal development books and content, the concept of knowing your “why” or your purpose comes up pretty often. This was originally popularized by Simon Sinek’s inspiring TED Talk on how leadership can spark action and has expanded into conversations about personal development and health. Some of my favorite content on the topic include Mark Manson’s “7 Strange Questions That Help You Find Your Life Purpose” and how Sadia Badiei of Pick Up Limes consistently ties in “why-power” into her health and lifestyle videos. I’ll be honest, I’m still fleshing out my purpose and my “why.”  No matter what stage of life we’re in, I think we’re all still figuring it out. I have owned the Passion Planner for three years, and each year brought different visions for my life. In 2018, my lifetime goal was to become a university career counselor. This year, it i…

5 Habits to Drastically Improve Your Life

5 Habits to Drastically Improve Your Life

Like most people, making and breaking habits has always been a challenge for me. I have a tendency to over-invest by attempting to completely overhaul my life, taking everything on at once. I convince myself that I can change my life in the short span of a week as long as I commit to myself. Inevitably, I become discouraged because I cannot keep up with the near impossible benchmarks that I have laid out for myself.I am learning that commitment is just as much about consistency as it is about discipline. Using the free Habit Tracker PDF has been my saving grace to stay on track despite the setbacks. I shared in a recent Passion Planner video that I have weeks where I am killing the game, and others where I struggle to keep up with the basics, resulting in a nearly blank Habit Tracker. Becoming familiar with failure and inviting it into my day-to-day continues to be a critical part of my personal growth, especially as it relates to building habits. In this post, I share with you fi…

5 Best Movies to Watch on Summer Break

5 Best Movies to Watch on Summer Break

Taking breaks is a critical part of boosting productivity and motivation. Our Passion Planners keep us accountable for getting things done, but planning time for rest and fun is just as important to prevent burnout and keep you energized.  Movie-going is my preferred method of relaxation. To me, there is nothing better than popcorn drenched in butter and an auditorium packed with enthusiastic viewers. Not even the overpriced concessions and the half-hour worth of trailers are enough to deter me. Because I frequent theaters so often, I invested in an AMC A-List membership so that I can watch up to three films a week for a reasonable $25 per month. (There are no blackout dates, and you can reserve seats for highly anticipated releases in advance!) Despite my love for cinema, making it to the movies is not always possible for me, so Netflix is a welcome and sufficient substitute, especially if I want to avoid crowds. Looking for recommendations of movies to watch this su…

Meet the Cover Artist: Xinwei Huang

Meet the Cover Artist: Xinwei Huang

Our first ever 2020 Dated Forest Green Passion Planner is the brainchild of artist Xinwei Huang. We sat down with her to ask her about her creative process, where she finds inspiration, and how she stays motivated to keep creating.Tell us a bit about yourself - how’d you get into art initially? I think every child has a period where they draw nonstop, I just never got over that phase haha. How has your art evolved over time and what steps do you take to continually improve your craft?I think with more exposure and education, I was able to incorporate more modern and classical influences into it, which I'm really happy about! Nowadays, I still try to make it out to museums and galleries, and reread my copy of Gardener's Art Through the Ages to freshen up on inspiration. And of course try to draw some challenging things once in a while so I'm not always operating in my comfort zone.Where did you draw your inspiration from for the 2020 Passion Planner cover that you created? From fabr…

Meet the Cover Artist: Elizabeth Martinez

Elizabeth Martinez is the supremely talented artist that designed our new 2020 Dated Mighty Yellow Passion Planner. We sat down with her to ask her about her creative process, where she finds inspiration, and how she stays motivated to keep creating.Tell us a bit about yourself. How’d you get into art initially?I got into digital art at an early age; I was really obsessed with pixel art in elementary school. I liked how you didn’t need a fancy program for it either - a lot of pixel art I saw was created in Microsoft Paint. It lead me into making these tiny vegetable looking creatures (with awful pillow shading) that I’d later animate with Microsoft Gif Animator. They would blink or sparkle, nothing too crazy. How has your art evolved over time and what steps do you take to continually improve your craft?I traded Microsoft Paint for Gimp in middle school and upgraded to Adobe Illustrator + Photoshop in college. In middle school and high school, I spent more time editing photos, drawing,…

5 Realistic Ways to Save Money for Travel in 2019

5 Realistic Ways to Save Money for Travel in 2019

Saving money, in general, is difficult. But, saving for travel is a whole different ball game. The amount you save directly affects how comfortable your trip can be, how far away you can go, and which restaurants you can visit during your stay. Since all of these things are important, I’m going to help you save for travel in the simplest ways possible. A note for the weary: the blog post that follows isn’t going to tell you to stop eating take out and start eating Top Ramen. I won’t tell you to drink less coffee as a means of saving money because that isn’t something I would ever actually implement in my own life. My goal is to provide you with realistic ways you can save money for travel while also maintaining contentment and joy in your day-to-day life. I don’t believe the two have to be mutually exclusive. We’ll call it saving without sacrifice. Well, there might be a little sacrifice, but it won’t be too bad - I promise. Please note: Passion Planner is not sponsored by any of the c…

4 Tips for Beating Planner Guilt

4 Tips for Beating Planner Guilt

I distinctly remember sitting across from my therapist, griping on and on about how my perfectionist behavior was ruining my life. I detailed multiple instances of intense self-criticism, people-pleasing behaviors, and my inability to take risks. Feeling fidgety and uncomfortable, I adjusted the box of Kleenex on her desk so that it was parallel to her notebook. Through the inflexibility of her poker face, a slight smile formed. Clearly the irony was not lost on her. I sighed, exasperated. “So, basically, how do I fix this?”There are no easy solutions for deeply ingrained behaviors such as perfectionism. However, she did recommend starting with a sketchbook as an avenue for creative expression. “Creative expression” sounded simple enough! Visibly excited, I shared my plans of marching to the store following our session to purchase new markers and an adult coloring book that I had my eye on. She was silent for about ten seconds which in a therapist’s office feels like a month. With a…
